Lincoln/Mercury Repair: CD4E Problems, mercury mystique, transmission overhauls

Hello, I have a bit of a problem with a 98 Mercury Mystique.  The ATX slips out of gear and then back in, quite hard. The check engine light is on, but has been on for a while and the fluid is dark and smells burnt.  I've been told i need to replace the transmission.  What do you think?

I think you should never ignore a check engine light. This leads to expensive repairs. Such as transmission overhauls. If you fluid is dark and burnt, you will need to have you transmission rebuilt to correct the problem. Expect to spend over $2000. Wish I had better news for you.
