Lincoln/Mercury Repair: Transmission/TCC Switch, highway fuel economy, torque converters

Question
My son bought a 92 Mercury Tracer. A service engine light came on. DTC brought back a TCC switch. I am curious as to what this is and if it will harm the transmission before we get it repaired? The garage I took it to doesn't do transmission work.

Answer
Hi Mike,

Torque converters work with the transmission by transfering power from the engine to the transmission. They also have their own set of "lock-up" clutches inside. When commanded by the car's computer to go into lock-up the clutchs create a one to one solid link so there is no slippage which in turn gives you better highway fuel economy. Lock-up also makes the transmission run cooler. If you don't have this fixed, you stand a chance of overheating the transmission and causing a catastophic failure. Have a transmission specialist replace the Torque Coverter Control solenoid. Should be less then $200. I suggest a Cottman Transmission if there is one in your area.
