Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 1993 Mercury grand Marquis rumbling sound, mercury grand marquis, cottman transmission center

Question

I bought a 1993 Mercury grand Marquis w/ 24K miles.  Great car, except for occassional rumbling coming from the back end.  It almost feels like I'm rolling over those rumble strips on the side of the road.  It seems to happen around gear change, but doesnt seem to effect the car in any other way.  It happens less at higher speeds and more frequently at lower speeds and shortly after starting.  thoughts?"

Answer
Hi William,

Where do we start? First, make sure everything in the trunk is tied down, spare tire, jack and so on... Second, it could be a bad mount on the transmission or a bad shock in the rear. Could be a bad wheel bearing as well. Then again it could be a loose hanger on the exhaust system. I suggest you take it to a Cottman transmission center. They will diagnose this problem for free. They can likely fix it at a great price too. You are welcome to contact me by resubmitting if you have any concerns...
