Mazda Repair: mazda mpv 2000 transmission, automatic transmission fluid, dipstick tube

Question
How do I inspect and/or change the automatic transmission fluid in my vehicle?

Thank you.  Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
To check fluid level:
Position the vehicle on level ground and clean thoroughly around the dipstick tube to ensure no foreign matter enters the tube when you take the dipstick out. Make sure the selector is in the P position and start the engine and run the engine until the engine and transaxle are at operating temperature. Then move the gear selector through all positions while the engine is still running then put it in park and shut off the engine. Take out the dipstick and whipe it clean then dip it again and check the level.
If the fluid needs changing there should be a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission. Remove this plug and allow all the fluid to drain out. Replace the plug and then refill with fluid through the dipstick tube. Make sure you use the correct fluid as incorrect fluid can damage the transmission.
hope this helps
