Mercedes Benz repair: rebuild transmission, rebuilder, 1997 e320

Question
hi, i have a 1997 e320 with 170,000 miles and i need to rebuild my tranny.  around how much should it cost and is it normal for the tranny to go out around this mileage.  thank you

Answer
For the transmission to go out at this mileage is not totally abnormal. As far as pricing is concerned, that is a little more difficult to answer. Most of the time...it is cheaper or just as expensive to replace the transmission alltogether. This is usually better to do because you KNOW that the new transmission will operate normally as opposed to having someone rebuild it. When you have someone rebuild it, you take the chance of having problems....it just depends on the skill of the rebuilder.
