What vehicle do you have?
450SEL 6.9     100.985    W116.036
450SEL         117.986    W116.033

You need to raise the car and check drive shaft flex discs, and transmission shift linkage.

Here are some sources for rebuilt transmissions.

Answer
I was pointing out that it could be the linkage broke loose.
Bad engine and/or transmission mounts can make the problem worse.

Possible: Clicking noise could have been the parking pawl trying to engage = engine/transmission twisted and ripped the linkage bar off the transmission, a loose rod could kick the transmission shift arm to park.

Burnt smelling fluid is never a good sign.

Jack up the car, check the linkage, engine mounts, transmission mount and drive shaft.
Have someone (with engine OFF) shift it through all positions while you are under the car looking.
