Question -
I have a 1987 MBZ 190e that starts and idles okay until I put it in gear.  Then it shakes, rattles, and rolls until I accelorate.  Then it runs like a top.  But at idle the shaking starts again.  If its in park or neutral it levels off it shakes.

Any ideas as to the possible cause(s), and fix(es)?
Answer -
Which engine do you have?
190E 2.3 16-Valve
190E 2.3
190E 2.6
How many miles on vehicle?

I have a 190E MBZ with a 2.3 engine with 213,000 miles located in central California near Sacramento, CA.
What is your generic geographic location = Canada, Southern California, Russia, Laos?

Generic suggestions:
This is a simple test for bad ignition wires and vacuum leaks.
At night, in a dark area, open the hood with engine running, use a hand pump spray bottle of water on mist setting, and spray a mist of water from roughly one half meter away over the intake manifold and engine.
You need to keep spraying until there is a morning dew heavy coating on all of the engine and wiring.
Listen for snapping, crackling or changes in engine speed.
Look very carefully for sparks around ignition components.

Danger:
Keep your distance and do not touch the engine or wiring, there is serious danger of electric shock from any bad ignition component.
The shock can be strong enough to kill if there are unknown serious cardiac problems.
Please remember your life and safety is of far greater value than any vehicle in the world.

Answer
Here is the critical data.
213,000 miles located in central California.

At that many miles, unless it has been through a major engine overhaul.
These test results will answer many questions about engine health.
#1. Have a cylinder compression test done.
#2. Have a cylinder leak down test done.
Have both tests done, and get the results in writing.
If the shop does not agree to both tests without argument, go to another shop.
