MG Car Repair: Speedometer Part Numbers, brown gammons, ebay

Question
Hi Barrie -

I have a 1975 Midget VIN #GAN6UF154353.

The speedometer works but the odomoter doesn't.  I am not sure if the car has the correct speedometer in it given some of the information I have seen on line.  The part number printed on the face is 5230/13.  The range is 0 - 120 mph.  I see a couple used Smyth speedo's for sale on ebay but the part numbers listed are different (even though the ad says for a 1975).  Can you tell me the correct part number?

Keith

Answer
All GAN6 midgets had the same speedo from September 74 through to November 77.

Be careful, some 1974 Midgets might not have been sold until 1975, so a 75 car could be a GAN5.

Yours should be calibrated 0-120 mph and there should be a small number 1000 printed on the dial.  This shows the internal gearing (how many turns per mile).  They are available new from Brown & Gammons for £60.
