MG Car Repair: MGB suspension, lateral location, rear wings

Question
I have a 1974 MGB GT which was produced for USA and have a problem with tyre rub on the body, particularly on the left hand rear wheel when turning left. Have larger than original wheels/tyres which contibutes to the problem but am asking if fitment of a panhard bar would improve the situation by better lateral location of the axle. Is there any information on fitting a panhard bar to an MGB GT?

Answer
This is a classic problem on the MGB.  The rear axle was manufactured with the mountings offset by about 6mm from the correct position.  I have no idea why this was done, but every one that I have ever seen is the same.  One side rubs, the other doesn't.

Your oversize tyres are the problem.  Maximum safe width is 185, and no, a Panhard rod will not fix it.

There is a lip inside the wheel arch that protrudes about 10mm.  You can gently fold this over along the top edge, which will allow the fitment of 195 tyres.  Anything wider and you are into Sebring arches or RV8 rear wings.

Moss sell a Panhard rod kit, so they can supply fitting instructions, but I don't think it will solve your problem.
