MG Car Repair: mgb clutch, tight bind, clutch master

Question
QUESTION: 1972 sat 25 yrs. installed new clutch master and new slave sine both were missing. Dot 3 used, shifts ok but slips. RPM's increase when acceleration and going up hills. car rocks in gear on slope. Time for clutch? can I pull tranny only?

ANSWER: Hi Bob,
First confirm that the clutch hydraulic system does release the clutch completely. If so it is probably a clutch problem and NO you can not remove the trans to do the job.

QUESTION: how do I tell if the clutch is being released all the way? looking while someone engages only moves it 3/4 of inch or so. Is the rod in all the way at neutral? can I try to pry it in or out. thanks Bob

Answer
Have someone pump up the clutch pedal and release it. Then feel the slave cylinder rod and the clutch arm to see if it is free or in a tight bind. You should be able to force the arm and rod into the slave cylinder with only a little effort. If it can't be moved it is holding the clutch disengaged.
