Mitsubishi Repair: 2000 galant belts, pullys, ac compressor

Question
Hi,

My 2000 galant's belt (the one for the power steering and ac compressor) popped off. I adjusted the pullys, put the belt back on and tightened everything back up. When i started the car the belt just popped right off again. Is this an issue with a stuck pully? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Answer
Chris,
This may be caused by a stuck or broken pulley, broken tensioner, or even weak power steering or A/C compressor bracket.  Sometimes, though rarely, the belt can stiffen and essentially get smaller.  It can loose its elasticity and can cause it to come off.  Try a new belt and see if that helps.  Also check your engine mounts.  If you have a broken mount, that can cause the engine to tilt to one side an cause the belt to get pushed off when the engine is running.  Have that checked out as well.
Good luck!
