Mitsubishi Repair: radiator fan 1992 3000gt sohc, replacing a head gasket, radiator fan

Question
the fans, do not come on when the motor reaches operating temperature. recently my engine got extremely hot and now i have white smoke, and air in the coolant,,,a lot of air...
what makes the fan cycle? can i bypass the relays? the fan on the right looking in does work as i ran poser to it. i could not get the other fan to come on. is there any kind of schematic showing the flow of current? sorry for the long post, but i am in obviously deep trouble.
thanks
Brian

Answer
Brian: Don't like the sound of the white smoke, sounds like you cooked the head gasket on your engine, you need to get that checked. Mean while the fans run with a relay, so you need to check those. With the hood open, standing looking at the engine are three small boxes, one by the driver's side of the engine and two over by the battery. In those are large fuses and relays, also on the top of each box should be which fuse and relay are in each box but also what they control. You need to be checking those. Also the switch that turns the fans on could be bad too. Also check to make sure all the wiring is ok, older cars the wires can break down. Are you sure the water pump in the car is good and moving the water around the engine? Right amount of coolant? Oh shoot air in the coolant is not a good sign, you have then I would say cooked that head gasket and that will have to be replaced or else you will start getting oil mixing with the coolant. You need to get this car to a shop to be checked over. Of else get yourself a repair manual, most parts stores sale them, they cost around $20.00 and well worth the money for someone that might want to work on his own car. But replacing a head gasket is not an easy job and so a shop would be a better idea. I wish I had better news for you. God bless: Linda
