Mitsubishi Repair: 3.0 oil pressure, metal shavings, shaft bearing

Question
Hello Anthony, I have a 91 dodge spirit with the 3.0L mitsubishi engine. It lost oil pressure while driving so i stoppped and checked the oil full. started it back up and the pressure jumped up to normal. almost made it home and lost pressure again. engine will idle at about half on the gauge but when you drive it all of a sudden it drops below zero .  I dropped the oil pan and found a pile of aluminm shaving in the pan. the car has 185000 miles on it so i installed new rod and main bearings.Thought the oil pump was shot and thats where the shavings came from, but when i pulled the pump it looked like new. cant find where the shavings are coming from. pulled the front valve cover and everything looks good? Put it all back together and drove it for 2 days and lost pressure again. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks Jim

Answer
Jim,
Severe oil pressure drops many times result in a quick temperature increase and sometimes an increase in engine noise.  But if you haven't noticed this, you may just have a bad sending unit on the oil filter housing.  Metal shavings can be caused by a wearing down of a balance shaft bearing.  I'm not familiar with the Spirit, but it's a general configuration of many Mitsubishi engines.
Good luck!
