Mitsubishi Repair: 2000 Eclipse GT, timing belt replacement, eclipse gt

Question
Hello there. I need to have my AC fixed, is this a swap I can make on my own? THe shop quoted me $681 for the compressor   $68 for the expansion belt   labor totaling $950.  Next, I thought since my car now has 140k in milage that I should consider changing the timing belt.  I don't remenber if it was changed before.  Should my timing belt at 140k be change "just to be safe"?  I heard if these timing belts break it could ruin the engine.  True?  Thanks in advance. LM

Answer
Louie,
If it's been over 60,000 miles since your last timing belt replacement, it's a good idea to do it.  And you are correct, if the timing belt snapped while you're driving, there's a good chance you will ruin the engine.

Replacing the compressor is not an easy task.  In some cases, it's necessary to lift the engine to be able to access.  I would not recommend doing it yourself.  $681 is the cost of a new OEM compressor.  The labor price, however, seems quite expensive.  On average, most mechanics charge roughly $75-90 per hour.  This is usually highest at the dealership.  You may want to get a second estimate.
Good luck!
