Mitsubishi Repair: 95 Eclipse, mitsubishi eclipse gs, mass air sensor

Question
I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0L, automatic transmission with 88,000 miles on it.  The car is idling a little hard and sounds like it's missing.  The check engine light came on and when checked it said the problem was the ignition coil.  This has been replaced once approximately 2 yrs ago.  While driving home it started to rev up and down and then sputtered and lost power.  It started up again and I was able to drive it the last 400-500 yards to the house and it did the revving again and shut off in the driveway.  When starting it again it revs real high and low.  Any help would be greatly appreciated on this.

Answer
Scott,
Sounds like you have a problem in your intake system.  It may be a bad mass air sensor, faulty throttle position sensor, clogged EGR valve, malfunctioning throttle body, or bad Idle Speed Controller.  If you have a Chiltons or Haynes service manual for your (available at most parts stores for around $15), it'll run you through the procedures to check all those items.  Else, have a mechanic specifically check the items I mentioned and hopefully they'll find the exact cause.
Good luck!
