Mitsubishi Repair: Whats that noise? Help!, engine oil pressure, mitsubishi 3000gt

Question
1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt.  3.0 DOHC.  While driving on interstate engine lost power and oil pressure dropped.  No dummy here, I pulled over and had car towed.  Initially after checking oil and adding a quart, I started car and it idled fine for about a minute or two and then a load clicking noise started coming from engine.  Oil pressure again started to drop from normal to almost nothing. Sounds almost like a baseball card stuck between the spokes of a bicycle tire.  I have read some of your other reviews and is it possible that the noise is my oil pump as the oil pressure starts out at mid range and then drops consistantly lower and lower or is this sound more like an engine change?  Note to self...........never borrow your daughters car!!!!!

Answer
Ed,
The clicking noise from the engine is probably lack of oil getting to the lifters, and they will clack quite loudly when they are not properly lubricated.  Because the oil pump is mechanical, it can only move and circulate intime with the speed of the engine.  If the engine is having a problem and cannot keep the proper idle speed, then the oil pressure will drop.  But for the engine to loose power at highway speeds, that indicates a problem more than just your oil pump (fyi: oil pumps rarely go bad).

You'll want your mechanic to check the ignition system and fuel system first off.  If you're getting lack of air and/or fuel, or your ignition system isn't firing properly due to worn components of improper timing, this problem can occur.  I would definitely check the fuel pump to be sure that is functioning properly.  Those have been known to be problematic in early 90's Mitsubishi.  And if your car's computer detects an insufficient amount of fuel, it will kill your engine as demonstrated while you were driving on the interstate.

In regards to your car's computer, read this article for further information:

It's possible the ECU is showing initial signs of failure and at the least, it should be inspected.  If it is showing any signs of damaged, it should be reconditioned or replaced.
Good luck!
