Mitsubishi Repair: Montero Sport, crank shaft, complete fuel system

Question
Thanks, I told my father the answer. And as always "Dad Knows Best" (funny), However, he seems to think it is more of a 'knocking' than 'ticking' sound. What could this be? It doesn't shake or ride rough, its just making a noise.

1998, Montero Sport, v6. I just had the crank shaft repaired, and now the problem I am having almost sounds like a metal to metal ticking sound. The car did not run out of oil. The power steering and things still work.
Answer -
Ronnie,
That ticking may be caused by clogged lifters.  When the oil passages in the lifters get clogged, it restricts oil flow, and makes your valves clack and tick.  The best way to fix this is to either remove and clean the lifters, or buy new ones (always the most expensive option).

Check your oil level as well.  Low oil levels and dirty oil will cause ticking to be more pronouced.  For your next oil change, make sure you are using the correct weight of oil as recommended for your car; shown in your owners manual.  There are not any miracle additives I can think of that will clean out your lifters if that's the problem, so don't go out and spend an arm and leg on stuff like Slick50 or ProLong.
Good luck!

Answer
Ronnie,
I do not believe that Montero has a knock sensor, so it's possible the timing is off and it's causing the knocking sound your dad is hearing.  If it's been 75,000 miles since the last timing belt change, this may be a good time to do it.

Also, low octane gasoline can cause a knocking sound.  Next time your dad fills up, have him use a tank full of premium gasoline, with a bottle of fuel system cleaner.  I personally like STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner.  It's not a fix in a bottle, but it may help.
Good luck!
