Mitsubishi Repair: setting timing sprockets, old fashion way, manual tranny

Question
92 Mit.Eclipse 1.8L manual  tranny

I need to identify the timing indicators on the sprockets and what position they have to be at top dead center PLEASE

Answer
Darryl,
There are timing marks set on your silent shaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft sprocket; usually in the form of white dots.  Next to each sprocket, there should also be a marking that looks like a triangle on the engine itself.  These are the marking put there by the factory.  Once all the white timing marks on the sprockets align with the triangular timing marks on the engine, your engine will be at top dead center (TDC).

But over time, these marks do tend to fade, making it that much more difficult to set your engine to TDC.  If that occurs, you'll have the do it the old fashion way.  Remove your spark plugs, and carefully place a long screwdriver in the #1 spark plug cylinder hole.  Then, attach a 1/2" drive ratchet to your crankshaft and slowly turn it CLOCKWISE (always, always, clockwise - NEVER counter clockwise).  Watch the screwdriver until it reaches it maximum height from being pushed up by the #1 cylinder head.  Once the screwdriver reaches it's maximum height, that will be your TDC point.  Once you find your top dead center, put marking on your engine and sprockets to help you find TDC easier next time.  I like to use either a high-temp white paint, or even white-out works in a pinch.
Good luck!
