Question
Hello I seen you answering other questions about old Suzuki bikes so I thought I would ask you a question. I rebuilt the carbs to my 1983 Suzuki gs550l and I am trying to set the float level for the carbs. when hooked up to a gas tank the carbs leak out of 4 small holes at the air box side of the carb. these holes have jets in them and I know that the float valve should shut off the gas flow before it gets high enough to come out of these holes but the adjustments are going from no fuel to very little fuel and even with very little fuel flow they are not shutting off when the floats come up. what can i do the correct this?

Answer
Brandon. Pull the carbs and the bowls and check to see if the seats are sealed in the body. Then check the needle valve to make sure the spring loaded pin in the top of each one is working. Install on the float and hook it under the bale wire and tilt the carb with the float on the side and the air throats facing up and down. Make sure the float valve and hinge is on the top side. The float hanging down should run parallel to the lower edge of the top of the carb, there is a tab to bend to reach this adjustment. If you tilt the carbs back slightly it still should contact the seat and give you an accurate measurment. then try again. If you turn the carbs upside down the floats are to heavy and will give you a false reading.
