Motorcycle Repair: idle problem 68 honda cl350, honda cl350, point gap

Question
Bill

I have rebuilt both carbs on my 68 honda cl350 however when rpms drop below about 1900 (idle)the idle speed varied by about 300
I have changed the points etc but no change. I had problems finding the parts for the 350a carb (jets & slide/diaphram)

Any suggestions

Thanks Tyler

Answer
Tyler,

Well, obviously the carb diaphragms have to be intact and no pin holes/tears for the bike to run at all.

Start at the beginning:

Valve adjust (.002 intake .004")exhaust

Check compression... 160-175psi

Check intake manifolds for tears/splits and replace o-ring to cylinder head.

Remove the point plate and check the function of the spark advancer. It must advance/retard smoothly and easily by twisting the points cam. Clean/lube as necessary. Put the point cam back on the same position you found it in, or it won't run at all.

Set points to .014"-.016" then move point plate so that the F mark alignment coincides with the right side points just opening. If left side is a little off, you can adjust the point gap until the points just open at the LF mark.

Sirius Consolidated in Canada has a/m carb kits and diaphragms that can be adapted to the slides.

350A carbs get 19.0mm float level, #60 primary main #115 secondary main jets, with a #38 idle jet. Make sure you get the right kit from them, if you order. They have tried to make generic kits for 350s and it doesn't work because of so many calibrations for CB/CLs.
