Motorcycle Repair: 1967 CL77 Stripped Kick Starter Shaft, starter shaft, engine seals

Question
Hope all is well. Do I need to split the cases to replace the kick starter shaft? I'm not all that mechanically inclined and am afraid of pulling it apart. Is there any quick fixes you could recommend?

Answer
Sean, the two things that happen to CL/CA 72-77 models is that the kickstarter "knuckle" that fits onto the end of the k/s shaft splines can split down the side, causing the k/s arm to "slip" when you attempt to kick it. So, check the condition of that part, first.

If you have pulled the cover and find that the shaft splines are stripped, it will require a motor removal and teardown of the bottom end. Honda's cases split horizontally, so you don't have to tear the whole motor apart if you are just repairing the bottom end transmission/kickstarter parts. I offer CDs full of repair information to guide you through the process. Contact me at my website for full details.

Once you get in there, it is a great time to evaluate the low gear bushing, kickstarter pawl and condition of the rollers where the gears rub on the k/s shaft. You can replace all the engine seals at that time, which is easier than driving them in when the cases are intact.

If the shaft splines are damaged, then there are no quick fixes to make it work again.
