Motorcycle Repair: 96 Road King, starter solenoid, starter button

Question
I have a 96 Road King. When trying to start the bike, the starter works but the motor doesn't turn over. It just makes a spinning sound. It began spinning intermittently but it would eventually catch and turn the motor and start. Now it doesn't catch at all. I'm guessing it's a sheared keyway or a busted starter gear. What do you think Mike?

Answer
Drain the primary fluid and remove the derby cover. Looking upward in the derby cover with a flashlight have somebody press the starter button and see if the jackshaft slides outward. If it doesnt, the you have a bad starter solenoid. If it does then pull the primary cover and check the teeth on the starter gear and the teeth on the clutch hub.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
