Motorcycle Repair: priming pushrods, push rods, pushrod

Question
Hi Mike, i have a 1991 Fat Boy 1340 cc i need to know what the procedure is on priming push rods? And is there a difference in length, and if so which push rods go where? Mike this is my second attempt on this procedure, the first time i don't know what i did wrong. But i bent a valve, valve has been replaced and now ready but scared to repeat the mistake. Please help and be as elementary as possible in your response, bike has been down for 2yrs don't know if that makes a difference for your response. Also the push rods are adjustable & have no idea how to adjust, or what to look for. Thanks Dan

Answer
What you must mean is bleeding the lifters. Normally your bike has solid pushrods, but somebody has put in adjustables. Some sets have longer pushrods and some have all the same lenghts. If you have longer ones, not counting the adjustment threads, they go to the exhausts. Now, starting at the front exhaust rotate the motor until the lifter is all the way at the bottom of its stroke. Now adjust he pushrod so it is tight and then go a couple more turns. Now you have to wait about 15 minutes so the lifter bleeds down. After that see if you can turn the pushrod between you fingers. If you can adjust it again. and do the waiting. Keep doing this until it wont bleed anymore. Once that happens turn it so its shorter and you can just rotate it between your fingers and then shorter one more turn. Now that one is done. Do each one just like you did this one
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
