Motorcycle Repair: Thread wore off - spark plug, spark plug thread repair, daelim daystar

Question
Hi,

I have a daelim daystar 125 cc motorcycle (make in year 2004). The engine block cover's spark plug thread had wore off, spark plug now can not screw tightly and the bike is not able to start.

Besides replacing the engine block cover, any other ways to rectify?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Leong,

There are a number of spark plug thread
repair kits available to fix the stripped
threads.

One is here:
http://www.timesert.com/

Also, http://www.helicoil.com.sg/

The way these work is you drill out
the spark plug hole and then thread
it to a larger size. Then the
timesert or heli-coil insert
is screwed into the new threads
making the hole original size
again.

These thread coils can usually
be found at most automotive stores
or online.

Measure your spark plug threads
to make sure you get the right
size thread kit.

Mechanics often use grease
to hold the filings from
falling into the engine
if it is not apart.

Do a search for time-sert
or heli-coil on you-tube
and you can see how they work.

The only other solution is
to replace the head or block cover.

Good luck!
