Motorcycle Repair: 83 Yamaha Maxim 750 Cam trouble, shaft bearing, pod filters

Question
I just recently put pod filters on this bike and I started hearing a rubbing noise. I took the valve cover off since that is where I thought I heard this noise and the cam shaft bearing surfaces are scarred and blued. I don't know if the pod filters caused this or if something may have blocked the oil coming to the top end. I turned the engine over manually and it did pump oil up there so maybe it is getting too hot. I don't know whether to polish the cam shaft and try to reuse the non replaceable bearing surfaces in the head or maybe even get a new head. Please help! THANKS!!!  -Ethan

Answer
I have seen pod filters put on bikes before and had a lean running condition but it usually doesnt affect the cams. The may be due to a lack of oil on the top end. Maybe the pressure valve from the oil pump sticking and not letting enough oil to flow.  There may be an additional problem you just discovered shortly after installing the air filters.Change the oil and filter also, you can try to polish the cam journals but they are fitted to a close tolerance to keep pressure up it may not work and you may end up purchasing a cam and head assembly. Try Steves Cycle Salvage in Tifton Ga. 1-800-622-9253 they have a lot of cycle parts and are somewhat reasonable.
