Motorcycle Repair: yamaha PW50, crankcase oil, yamabond

Question
Hello

I went to start my son's pw50 this afternoon.  I kicked the crank lever one time and it's like something came undone inside.  The lever moves but does nothing to start the bike.

What could this be

Thanks for your time!!

Answer
There is a small spring on a serated plate welded to the kick start shaft, some times the case that the shaft turns in wears and lets the shaft slip out of alignment and the bevel cuts around the shaft dont line up properly ans slip or the spring that pushes the two notched plates togethor may have collapsed. You will need to drin the crankcase oil out or lay the bike on the left side and pull the kick start lever then the cover bolts. As you pull the cover off push the kick start shaft through the cover and remove the cove and inspect the kick start mechanism for wear or damage. If the tip of the spring isnt broke off be carefull of un hooking it from the case hole as it will flip back some and do some damage to your fingers. You shoul be able to remove the shaft and spring and gear. Get a mew gasket and seal when you go back with the cover if the cover kick start hole isnt worn. Some makes of gaskets have an adhesive made onto the surface bu do not use silicone for a glue. It is not compatible with oil and will get slimey and the cover may start to leak.and youll get to do this again. Use a gasket sealer like Yamabond or Kawabond to put on gasket surface. It doesnt wash off well so be neat with it.
