Motorcycle Repair: clutch quit, hydraulic clutch, vaccum pump

Question
2006 Vulcan 1600 with 12,000 miles. After changing to a new battery my clutch quit It was working fine when I parked it. I pull it and nothing happens. I can kick into 1st and the engine dies even on a stand. Did I knock something loose?

Answer
I"ll try to answer this question. The hydraulic clutch has nothing to do with the battery,so it could be a whole different problem. The clutch needs to be bled out using new fluid at least once a year. The master cylinder uses a DOT3-4 brake fluid which can absorb moisture and break down.Flush out like a brake system however the pressure is so light you may not feel anything so a vaccum pump may need to be used to pull the fluid through. As far as dying when put in gear, some units have a kick stand safety switch which kills the engine when shifting into gear to keep you from driving the bike with the stand down.
