Motorcycle Repair: pilot jet does not have screwdriver slot, honda cb900 custom, 1980 honda cb900

Question
I have a 1980 Honda CB900 Custom. I am rebuilding the carbs and purchased a kit (because 2 of the air screws were damaged). the kit includes new pilot jets. The jets in the carbs do not have slots. they aren't stripped out, they simply aren't there. I have never encountered this before. I don't think they are pressed in, are they? the new ones have threads. what should I do?

Rubber plug
Hi Larry,

Many of these carbs look similar but there are
small changes through the years.

It sounds like you have the carbs with
the primary and secondary main jets and
the non-removable slow jet.

These carbs should have a small passageway
above the slow jet that leads
to the main jet area.
You may be able to see it if you look carefully.

If your carbs have this added passageway
then they have no screw in pilot jet
but must have a rubber plug 6.5mm diameter x 9mm Long
added above the slow jet.

You may have got a carb kit for a newer model
or they may just add the extra jets for those
models that have them. Some of the carbs
usually a little newer ones have only one main jet and
one removable pilot jet rather than the
3 jet system.

Be sure to replace the rubber plugs over the
slow jet or your fuel mixture may be
overly rich as it will draw too much fuel
up from the float bowl.

Make sure the passageway to the main tube area
from the slow jet area is clear.

Just use what you can from the kit or
look for a kit that comes with the rubber plugs.
Check your other gaskets/parts to make sure they will fit.
