Motorcycle Repair: Battery fuse burn out, amp fuse, amp fuses

Question
Hello Wayne. I have a simple question. I have a 1990 Yamaha venture. the battery is dead so I connected a trickle charge to the battery output cable. The 3 amp fuse seemed to have blew. What is the rule of thumb with replacing the fuse? Can you use a higher amp fuse such as a 5 amp? or would this charge too fast?
Thank you for your time.
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

A confusing question although the answer may be simple.
You may have to get back to me with a follow up
question as there are no 3 amp fuses in a
Yamaha Venture that I know of.

Are you refering to a fuse in the fuse box
or on the starter relay?

If the fuse blew on the charger just replace it
with the same but if you are referring to the bike
let me know the location of the fuse and the type.
Is it a round fuse or blade fuse and also
did you attach the charger directly to
the battery or it's cables?

It is important to use the same amperage
fuse if it is the correct one in the first place.
Using a higher amp fuse can overload the wiring
circuits in some cases especially if there is
a short somewhere in the wires.

Let me know if you have more info or want
answers regarding this.

Thank you,

Wayne S.
