Motorcycle Repair: Brake and shifting issue, yamaha maxim, disk brakes

Question
Hello Bill, I have a Yamaha maxim XJ 650 and I have two questions you might be able to shed some light on.  First question is just recently my rear brake pedal has stopped popping back up when you take your foot off of it and the brake stays engaged unless I lift the pedal from underneath and it "click" back into place.  The second question is that the gear shift pedal has been doing the same thing.  Any ideas?

Answer
Danny... not a Maxim expert, but if you have drum brakes on the back, then the brake cam is sticking in the backing plate. If disk brakes, then the master cylinder needs a rebuild.

Shift lever shaft could be bent or binding in the side case... or the return spring on the shift shaft is broken.
