Motorcycle Repair: 1976 FLH ignition problems?, weber dcoe, jet size

Question
QUESTION: I am attempting to figure out several problems with a 1200 fl.  It has a little over 500 hundred miles on a re-built engine. the carb is a weber 40 dcoe15, it seems a little large for this bike. the exhaust is shorty straits.  the bike ran fine, only had a hessitation at a certain rpm, and would come out of it.  the points were not centered on the contact point. engine has never been timed with a light. coould this be the problem?  thanks

ANSWER: I would start by checking the timing. If that doest help, the you exhaust might be the problem. You have no back pressure on the exhaust, which will cause hesitation. You can add baffles to up the back pressure

QUESTION: I took the weber dcoe 18 off!! too much carb. she ran smooth-with the hesitation after timing, there are no baffles in the shorty straits. stock carb going back on. stock jets in carb are 68 and 175.  what jet size should i go with without baffles? engine is bored a little with head work done. and larger cam, the thing is I don't know how much she's built.

Answer
Start by taking the bike for a ride. Do not go over 2500 RPM. Go for about 5 miles. If the bike bogs then go bigger on the intermitate jet. If it spits through the exhaust, go small. Once you have it set, go for another ride, but ride over 2500 RPM. Check for the same thing. If it bogs, go bigger on the main jet, spits through the exhaust, go smaller on the main jet. Everytime you make a change you need to adjust the air/fuel misture screw.
Good luck and happy riding
