Motorcycle Repair: Troubleshoot 1971 Honda SL125 problem, honda sl125, plug caps

Question
Ok, I need help please . . . 1971 Honda SL125, has sat inside for 30 years, my husband is not a mechanic but has decided to take on the task of getting it up and running again.  He thinks he has covered the basics of taking apart, cleaning, back together, new fuel . . . Here is where we are and my question:

Air Filter is off

We shoot starting fluid into open throat of carberator

Throttle is turned far enough to allow starting fluid into valve area of motor

Spark plug shows good fire when activated by kick start

No "explosion" of starting fluid . . . WHY?

Answer
Hi Susan,

When using starting fulid, leave throttle closed. Spray  one second bursts into the carburetor opening while engine rotates. Cylinder vacuum will draw starting fluid into engine. Usually, one or two sprays is enough to start the engine. If more is required, other problems may exist.

Have your husband remove and inspect the spark plugs for fouling. Starting fluids may wet foul the plugs. Clean or replace the plugs and re-try starting.

Check spark plugs for an arc. Place plugs in plug caps and ground plugs against engine. Crank engine and watch for blue arc at each plug electrode. If no arc, ignition problem. Blue arc means healthy voltage. Otherwise, test ignition system.

Check ignition timing and breaker points gap. IF timing or gap is out of service limits, the engine may not start or run poorly if it starts. Adjust or replace accordingly.

Check carbs for evidence of varnishing. Thoroughly clean and synchronize carbs.

I'll send several tech files to your email.
