Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Honda CX500d, cx500, forum

Question
Hi Bob.  This snow is really putting the pits on riding but anyway, I have an 1980 Honda CX500D.  I have gone thru the carbs and cleaned them out. The slides work good, the floats and valves i believe to be working good also.  The bike WILL NOT GO OVER 60mph. It falls flat on its face. I have checked all that I can think of. I am not a bike tech. I am a full line ASE auto tech.  I have the know how but I dont know what to do next.  I have completely cleaned the carbs and blown thru them. It has new valves and floats.  Any suggestions. This bike is in incredible shape and is a great bike. also my first. The bike started this 1.5years ago and I got it from a friend. We have replaces all of the ignition and stator. Batt Volt is around 14.2 at high idle. Has new batt.  Please help. Thanks

Answer
This is a common symptom for these bikes so I looked it up on the Honda Transverse Twins of America (HTTA) forum. Have a look at these threads:

I highly recommend joining this forum. It doesn't cost anything and the folks there are friendly & knowledgable (except for one cranky guy with a sidecar ;-) and have probably tried just about anything you need or want to do to your CX so you can benefit from our experience.
