Motorcycle Repair: leaking front shock??, model bike, fork seal

Question
Good day. My name is Richard and I just recently bought an 84 Honda Nighthawk. I realize you said you were familiar with the models into 1980 but I was hoping you could help me out. My more experienced rider friend told me my front shock was leaking after I pointed out a dark gray liquid that was on one of the left front fork and on the cables and parts just underneath.  I have a manual coming in the mail (had the bike a week) but I don't know if this is a job that I can do myself. I was advised it may be a $500-$1000 fix.  My questions are: Is this a good estimate? Is it best to have a mechanic replace the shocks or can I do it myself with some time and good instructions? Are there any tips about this particular model bike that may be useful in the future in terms of repairs common to this model and regular upkeep?

Thank you for your patience and time.

Richard

Answer
Rich, the fork seal replacement is not too difficult. But there's are some thinks you have to know.  The manual will help but if you get stuck, let me know and I can talk you through it.  As far as the cost of repair, it seems high to me since it only takes about 1-2 hours to do.

Regards
Rich
