Motorcycle Repair: Need a Key, honda cb650 custom, 1980 honda cb650

Question
I have a 1980 Honda cb650 custom. I need a key. How do I get one? also will the new key open up the gas tank as the old one did? thanks.

Answer
Bill, the ignition lock used to have a number stamped on them that corresponded to a key code.  Sometimes dealers had a stash of old keys that you might be able to match up with.  The dealer I used to work for always took 2 of the 4 keys that came with the bike from the factory and keep them in case the owner lost a set.  He'd then of course charge the customer but that was his way.

If you can't find a key that way, the only way to get a replacement key would be to buy something called a lock set that includes the ignition switch, fuel tank cap and helmet lock.  If you do get lucky and find a key that fits the ignition switch, it will also open the fuel tank cap.  But if you place the ignition switch the new key probably won't fit the tank lock and you'll still need to find one to fit that.
