Motorcycle Repair: 1980 cm400t, cam lobes, cam shaft

Question
I have 1980 cm400t. The motor was in pieces when I bought it.
I don't know how to put the timing chain onto the cam shaft to where the valves are in time. Please if you know how or have any tips I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Scott

Answer
Well once you get the cam cam sprocket and camshaft in place, you'll see two indexing marks on the cam sprocket. Make sure the cam lobes on number one cylinder are pointing away from teh followers to be sure you have teh cam in the right orientation.  Put the crank on top dead center number one cylinder ("T" on the flywheel).   Those two marks line up parallel to the top of the head.  So you just move pull the sprocket off the cam move it a tooth or two as needed and put it back on the cam to check it.  Once you're happy the crank and cam sprocket are in time, you can carefully rotate the crank until the bolt holes in the cam and sprocket line up in insert the bolts.  You may want to put a drop of lock tight blue on the bolts to keep them in place.  Rotate the crank slowly through two complete turns to make sure you haven't make a mistake and the pistons aren't hitting any valves.  Also it will give you a change to check the index marks to be sure they are still lining up with the head.  If all looks good, you're done.

Good luck
