Motorcycle Repair: at approx.4500rpm the engine has power loss, honda cx 500, 1979 honda cx 500

Question
My 1979 Honda CX 500 Custom probably needs a replacement regulator/rectifer (200 $) because the need for a trickle charge of the battery (even a new one) is necessary after about 2-3 weeks of operation. That has been the situation for the past 15 years. Last year, after cruising @ 65 mph for an hour, I found that there was an engine power loss above 4500 rpm. I've replaced the plugs, caps, coils, air filter and also purged and cleaned the carbs. Would a new regulator/rectifer solve this problem.? The cycle has 67  k on the odometer. This problem also occurs at any rpm when a sudden load is put on the engine. Other than that the bike starts, runs (gentle cruising up to 50 mph) ok unless the throttle is yanked. Thanks for your input. Ronald

Answer
Ronald,

sounds like the high circuit on the stator is
bad. This is the blue wire which has a high
100 volt output for high speed running.

Check here: http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cx500/stator/
for a temporary white wire fix as replacing
the stator is a big job.
