Motorcycle Repair: 76 Ironhead Sporty blowing blow, oil rings, project bike

Question
Mike,
Just picked up a 76 Sporty Ironhead (project bike but running strong) from nephew. He got it from some one else who got it but couldn't ride it you know how that goes. Any way it was soppose to have been rebiult with only 300 miles on it now. Bored out to 1200, and a cam. The front cylinder is blowing blue smoke. Bike sounds good sounds like it has a different cam. check compression 115 on both.  both spark plugs are black ligthly oily. Do you think it is possible the oil rings could have been put in up side down ? trying to get hold of the guy who did the "rebuild" but no luck yet.
thanks for your time.

Answer
blowing blue smoke is an indication of burning some oil, but with only 300 miles on the motor the rings might not be seated yet. It could also have not been bored correctly or there is to much clearence in the valve to valve guides.
By the way, you cant bore 76 cylinders to 1200. Not enough meat in the cylinders. The cylinders would have to be replaced.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
