Motorcycle Repair: yamaha r6 brake lights flicker whn engaged, fuse holders, fuse holder

Question
both front and back will make brake lights flicker or go out when engaged all the way or too fast. the voltage drops too from 9v to abt 5 or 6v.

Answer
Ramona,

(The front and rear brake each has it's own
switch, that's why I suspect the wiring, grounds,
fuse holder or brake light unit)
It goes like this, from the fuse a brown power wire
runs to both switches, then a green/yellow wire comes
from the front brake switch and combines with
a yellow wire coming from the rear brake switch.
This yellow wire goes to the tail/brake light.
The brake light unit itself is grounded, probably
a black wire.

-disconnect the brake/tail light connector and check
the voltage on the black/yellow wires coming to the light.
Key should be on and one of the brake switches on. You should
have over 12 volts.
-Your battery should read close to 14 volts
when the bike is running. Check this out too.
-Voltage should never be down to 9 or less.
If your battery is not reading 13.5-14.5 volts
your charging system may not be working.
If it checks out I suspect the brake/tail light
has problems. Check the ground wires and fuse
holders and make sure battery cables are tight.
