Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Maxim 550, crankcase breather hose, valve adjustment

Question
Hi, i am having a problem with idle speed. It's not critical, but very annoying! I'll warm the bike up and then set the idle speed to around 1500 rpm. It'll run like that for a while. Then i take it out on the road and when i come back it won't idle lower than 3000 and the tach starts having a seizure. What do you think is most likely the problem there? Also, is the supposed to be a valve in the crankcase breather hose to stop from flooding the airbox with oil? Thank-you

Greg

Answer
Hi Greg.

First thing.....stop adjusting the idle speed.

For now.

Get out the repair manual (get one if you don't have one) and do a full maintainence inspection and fix/adjust/repair all that are outside of tolerance.

Start with the air and oil filters.  If they are due or dirty, then change them (change the oil with the filter).

There could be leaks in the manifolds.  If the manifolds are loose on the carbs, loose on the heads or cracked, then it is a major part of the problem.

I would guess that the valve adjustment is due as well as the carb synch.  Adjust the idle while doing the carb synch.

There is no valve that is in the breather hose.  Never has been.

There could also be a short in the tach wiring or a bad connection in that circuit.

Start with all of that and see what happens.
Good luck and ride safe.
