Motorcycle Repair: yamaha r6, vacuum leak, seasonal storage

Question
Hey my name is Ed and i currently have a 2002 yamaha r6. I would be grateful if you could help me with my problem. The bike wount idle right so I cleaned the fuel jets and it ran ok for the next week or two. After that, the bike ran ok in high speeds and I had to put the choke on so the engine wouldnt cut out at stops. The bike wont idle right, whats your advice?
I would appreciate your help on this topic. Thanks - Ed

Answer
Hi Ed.

I see a few possibilities;

1) The bike sat in seasonal storage with fuel in the system and there is "varnish" in the fuel.  This requires you to remove all of the fuel in the tank and get rid of it, clean the carbs and reseal the fuel tank.  Then use fresh, clean gas.

2)  The valve and/or ignition timing is off.

3)  The carbs are way out of synch.

4)  Something came loose in the carbs and is interfering with fuel flow.

5)  Vacuum leak in the connection of the carb to manifold, the manifold to engine or a leak in the manifold itself.

Check those and see what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
