Motorcycle Repair: 1984 HONDA NIGHTHAWK 700SC, 1984 honda nighthawk, narrative description

Question
HI MARK, I HAVE A 1984 HONDA NIGHTHAWK 700S. THE BIKE HAS 32,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS THAT IN 4TH, 5TH, AN O.D. WHEN THE BIKE IS AT EXACTLY 4500 RPM AND HELD THERE, (ABOUT 50-60MPH), IT SEEMS TO SLKOW DOWN AND SPEED UP .I FEEL IT AS THE RIDER, TO THE POINT THAT I WILL ACTUALLY LEAN FORWARD ON THE SLOW DOWN, AND PULL BACK ON THE SPEED UP. I WATCH THE TACH, AND THE RPMS DO NOT DROP OR GO HIGHER. IT ALMOST FEELS AS IF YOU GET HIT WITH A HEADWIND BUT THATS IS NOT WHAT IS HAPPENNING. IF I SPEED UP THE RPMS TO 5000 OR SLOW DOWN TO 4000 IT DOES NOT DO IT. ANY IDEAS? I RIDE THE BIKE ALOT, SO THE GAS IS ALWAYS FRESH.  THX IN ADVANCE, JIM    JMASELLI1@COX.NET

Answer
Hi Jim,

I suspect the carburetors need thoroughly cleaned, tuned, and synchronized to restore proper performance.

This problems is dificult to diagnose from the narrative description. Ya have to be there with many problem types.

Throttle opening positions are needed determine which area of the carburetors needs tuned to correct the problem. Instead of rpm, give throttle opening positions such as; "between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle" etc...

RPM is useful for fine tuning, though throttle positions indicate which area of jetting needs work.

I'll send several tech files to your email.
Review the information and try to diagnose the problem.

Respectfully,
