Motorcycle Repair: Crank case breather hose Kx250, crank case breather, stroke bikes

Question
Hi Chris, I have just purchased a near new 2005 KX250 it has had very little use, but does have a bit of a knocking/tapping sound near the head, which I have noticed 2 stroke bikes have to some degree,, but the MAIN Problemo is:  there is oil at the bottom of the Crank Case overflow hose and it blows smoke from the hose especially when cold on startup... once warm is not so bad but still there... I have never come across this before and I am quite concerned,, and a bit P'd as the guy told me it was ridden once only..

Answer
Hi Stephen.

It may have been ridden only once, but not quite broke in yet, or the guy flat-out lied.  The knocking could be valve tap because the bike is due for it's break-in service.

As far as the smoke, that could be due to the same reason; the bike is just broke in or not quite broke in and needs it's break-in service.  The guy could have ridden the bike too hard during break-in as well.  Most of that will only be found out by taking it to a shop.
With the manual, and common shop tools, you could do the valves yourself, but if the warranty is still in effect on the bike, then take it in and let them look at it instead.  There is the possibility that it could be a warranty issue.

Good luck and ride safe.
