Motorcycle Repair: Leaking Oil, air filter assembly, yamaha seca

Question
Hello Chris.  I have a 1982 Yamaha Seca XJ750RJ.  I have a problem with the bike leaking oil.  Here's the scenario to how I believe it started.  Since the bike couldn't start (I found out later it was bad spark plugs) I used carb cleaner on the air filter to try to jump start the bike (Not using that technique again)  I was riding and the engine got hot and stalled.  I had to wait before I could get the bike back into neutral before starting it again.  I also feared that I lost oil so I added more oil.  I believe the bike overheated because it was running too lean from the carb cleaner on the air filter and also fouled the spark plugs as well.  Eventually I could start the bike and ride, but when I finished riding I noticed oil pouring out from underneath the air filter assembly is located, right next to the hose connecting to the engine.  I've asked some friends about this.  3 things come to mind, either a crack in the air box, too much oil therefore its overflowing, or a busted crankcase.  Since I described the scenario, I was hoping you may help me solve this problem.  Thank you for any answers to this dilema.
Eric

Answer
Hi Eric.

First rule; before adding oil, ALWAYS check the oil level.

The oil is overflow from overfilling the crankcase.  I hope that you have replaced the air filter, since that carb cleaner will have ruined the material of the filter.

The only thing that you can safely spray into the airbox, with a filter in, is ether (automotive starting fluid).  Don't use anything else.

Good luck and ride safe.
