Saab: 1993 Saab 900 S 2.1 Slave replacement., saab 900 s, clutch pressure plate

Question
QUESTION: I had to replace the hose from clutch master to slave. The threads in the slave were stripped and the new line would not go all the way in.  so I assume a new slave right?

Can I not just replace the slave and not the whole clutch? The clutch is less than 10, 000  and the slave worked, I just cant get the hose in.

any direction to replacing the clutch slave would be appreciated

ANSWER: Donny:
Unfortunately, a new slave is necessary. Getting it out is quite a project, especially if the hydraulics are not working. I have done it with a helper; one person uses a small crowbar to depress the clutch fingers sequentially and the other pushes a circular spacer(mine is made from 1/8 steel rod) little by little under each depressed finger as the clutch pressure plate is rotated. {You should get a "book" to fill you in on the details, too much to spell out here). Once depressed, the slave should be unscrewed (3 Allan-head screws) and the pressure plate unscrewed also; both come out together once the front shaft is removed (see book).

The clutch itself should be fine..they last a long time and need not be replaced.

QUESTION: Hi,

Thank you for answering.

isnt it true though on the 93, that the slave can be removed without taking out th pressure plate etc etc? should I replace he bearings or anyhing else?  like I said earlier, everything is fairly new, except whoever put the master slave hose in stripped the hose recpepticule. got the new slave and the slave to master hose, just need to find a helper, as yes, no hydrolics. I am goingto use a copper wire, or a spark plag wire a the book indicated.

One other thing I forgot. The fluid line  that runs from the fluid resevoir to the master cyclinder, the "mesh" line with the clamps on the end had a small hole, so I ned to replace that also.  I cannot find one anywhere. I have called every shop or saab recycle place I can find.  no go.  Is there any substitute?

I really appreciate your help !

Donny:
Although I have not worked on any 900's newer than 1990, I don't think they have changed in the area of the clutch; so, I still think you may need to remove clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder all together. If not, then I stand corrected and you have an easier job!
You may wish to replace the clutch shaft pilot bearing. For this, you'll need to unbolt the flywheel and drive in a new bearing. It is easily checked once the clutch is out..just feel it with your finger for smoothness and integrity.
Regarding the fluid line...I am not familiar with a "mesh line"; Did you mean the hose that runs from the brake master cylinder to the clutch master cylinder? If so, then I think any neoprene hose of the correct diameter would work(a fuel line would be ok).

Also, I think a spark plug wire is too thick, but it may work for you.
