Motorcycle Repair: 83 v45 Magna, v45 magna, valve job

I have a 83 V45 Magna, is running rough, went through and cleaned the carbs and synchronized them.  Seemed to idle fine and synch up ok.  However as soon as I tried to road test it, it was bogging down in the low end.  Went a few blocks, it then began to backfire and pop.  Ya think I have a bigger problem such as a possible valve job needing to be done or vlaves needing adjusting.  It has 50,000 miles on it and who knows if anyone prior to me has ever adjusted them.  Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Whether you realised it or not, you answered your own question.  As per the repair manual, 50,000 miles is the typical time that the valves need to be done.

Do the valve adjustment and see what happens.
