Motorcycle Repair: Stalling, fuel contamination, contamination issues

Question
Hey Chris I'm sure you can help me.  I have a 1986 Honda Rebel Limited.  Two years ago I used gasoline from another vehicle that sat for some time and now the bike does not run right.  I have flushed the tank, pulled the carb off and cleaned it, used new gas, checked the flow from the tank to the carb and prayed alot.  The flow to the carb is fine whether ON position or on RESERVE position.
Here is my problem.  The bike starts easily with or without the choke on.  The battery is new.  After riding it for just a few minutes I loose the throttle.  Give it gas and it either stalls or slowly throttles up.  I have played with the idol with no success.  What is next?

Kevin

Answer
Hi Kevin.

When you reinstalled the carb, did you insure that it was properly sealed at the manifold.  what you are describing could be symptomatic of a manifold leak or fuel contamination. Two years is a long time to go between cleaning and recontamination, though.
Has the bike spent any time in seasonal storage?  You could have contamination issues from that.
There is also the possibility of a clogged air filter.  When was that last replaced?  Is it due or overdue?  If so, replace it and see what happens.

Get the idle back to what it should be and check the plugs to see how they look.  You are specifically looking for evidence of the bike running either rich or lean.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
