I just installed a spyke high torqe starter and 275cc amp gel battery in my 77 fl stroker and the solenoid fried. I have now replaced the solenoid and relay and the starter gear sticks in the engaged position and drians the battery in a matter of seconds. It will stick in even when I engage the gear manually without the battery being hooked up. Am I correct to assume the problem lies somewhere in the solenoid plunger hardware? Should I look some where else for the culprit? Also, should I boost the wireing to accomidate the higher amperage? Thanks, Greg

You can get higher amperage wiring for the battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter. You problem with the sticking is the spring in the solenoid. Its probably weak.
Good luck and happy riding

Thanks for your response. I already installed a new solenoid plunger kit and beefed up the electrics but before installing the solenoid and attaching the plunger it still stuck in the engaged position. probly need to replace the starter shift lever.
After reassembly the starter doesn't turn the engine over like I thought it would. Actually not any better than stock parts. From every thing I'm reading, a tune-up, top end job, and maybe adding compression release valves was probly my problem in the first place...? Thanks again, Greg

Answer
Since you have a stroker it takes alot to get it turning. One thing you can do is take a screw driver and jump between the two large posts on the starter solenoid. If the bike turns over fast then you have a problem with either the wiring, a component or ground.
