Motorcycle Repair: motorcycle transmission repair, motorcycle transmission, independant shop

Question
Hi Chris
I have a 2001 YZF600R Yamaha bike. It has started jumping out of 2nd gear under hard or sudden accelleration.
How many labour hrs (approx) are needed for this repair?
What would be a reasonable fee for this job?
What in terms of dismantling has to be done for this repair?
I have tried to order a factory manual but it keeps getting backordered. I have rebuilt truck(big rig) transmissions for a living in the past.
I have never attempted a motorcycle...not sure if I should or not. I would like an un biased opinion of what reasonable costs are involved!
Thanks so much for your opinion
Steve

Answer
Hi Steve.

The labour hours involved depend on the skill and speed of the mechanic doing the job.  It could be anything from a day to a week in total time to do the job (assuming that all of the parts are immediately available to replace.

The fees are also a bit subjective.  A dealership will usually charge about 30 dollars an hour while a smaller independant shop will often charge noticably less.

The work involved will include removal of the engine and splitting the case open, replacement of any gaskets fot the case halves, sorting out the actual cause of the problem (of course) and reassembly and reinstallation of the engine.

If you have rebuilt transmissions before, then you should be able to handle the job, but you need to wait til you get the repair manual.  Otherwise, let a shop do the work.

Good luck and ride safe.
