Motorcycle Repair: 1989 yamaha virago 750, yamaha virago 750, stator coil

Question
Chris, I have a 1989 Yamaha virago 750 with 44000 miles. the battery is being drained as the bike is run. I'm thinking alternater or rectifier but have no idea how to pinpoint the problem. The battery, ignition coils and wires are new. Any insight you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

Answer
Hi Mike.

At anywhere between 40,000 and 50,000 miles, the stator coil on the Virago requires replacement.  Check to see if it is producing power by running the bike and checking the charge at the battery.  If it is not showing 14volts DC or better, then the stator coil is bad (which is likely in this case) and needs replacement.

Good luck and ride safe.
